How Wrong-Way Crashes Occur and What Makes Them So Dangerous
Wrong-way crashes happen when a vehicle enters a roadway traveling against the designated direction of traffic. This can occur due to missed signage, confusion at highway entrances, or impaired driving. These incidents are more likely to take place on divided highways like interstates, where opposing traffic moves at high speeds.
Head-on collisions are among the most severe types of crashes because both vehicles often carry full momentum into the impact. This increases the risk of serious injury or death. Even a brief lapse in attention or a wrong turn can quickly lead to a dangerous situation.
Roadway design, lighting, and clear signage can help reduce the chance of these events. Drivers are also encouraged to remain alert, especially at night or in unfamiliar areas, where visibility and navigation may be more challenging.
