Detroit, MI (April 20, 2026) – A 15-year-old was pulled from a burning stolen pickup truck after a crash early on Monday morning, April 20, in Detroit, according to Michigan State Police.

The incident began just after 5:00 a.m. when a trooper attempted to stop a stolen Ford pickup in the area of Outer Dr and Schoolcraft. The driver fled, ran a red light, and continued through the area. The trooper did not pursue the vehicle and instead reported its last known direction of travel.

While relaying information to dispatch, the trooper observed a crash at Outer Drive and Evergreen Road involving the same truck. Officials said the stolen pickup struck another vehicle, setting it on fire.

The trooper pulled the teenage driver from the burning truck and provided aid until emergency units arrived. The 15-year-old suffered a minor head injury and was transported to a hospital for treatment. The condition of the driver of the other vehicle has not been released.

The crash remains under investigation.

How Stolen Vehicle Crashes With Fire Risk Are Handled

When a crash involves a stolen vehicle, emergency responders prioritize both medical care and scene safety, especially if fire is present. Vehicle fires can escalate quickly after a high-impact collision.

In these situations, officers often work to remove occupants from danger before fire crews fully extinguish the blaze. Rapid extraction can be critical when vehicles are actively burning.

Investigators typically review traffic signal timing, vehicle speed, and collision points to understand how the crash occurred. These details help establish the sequence of events leading up to the impact.
