Conway, SC (April 19, 2026) – A multi-vehicle crash led to the closure of the US-501 bridge near Conway Sunday afternoon, April 19.
Emergency units were dispatched around 4:10 p.m. after reports of several vehicles involved in a collision on the bridge in the Conway-bound lanes. Crews arrived to find multiple cars blocking the roadway, limiting access and creating a traffic standstill.
The bridge was shut down as responders worked to reach those involved and provide care. Vehicles were unable to move due to congestion on the bridge, which made it difficult for incoming units to access the scene.
At least one person was being treated at the scene, though the number of injuries and their severity have not been fully confirmed. Additional details about those involved have not been released. Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available.
Our thoughts are with those affected as they continue to recover.
Why Do Bridge Crashes Lead to Major Traffic Disruptions?
Crashes on bridges can quickly bring traffic to a halt because of limited space. Unlike regular roads, bridges often have narrow lanes and few places for drivers to pull over. When multiple vehicles are involved, there is little room to move around the scene.
Access for emergency crews can also be more difficult. Vehicles caught in traffic may block the path, delaying response times. In some cases, lanes must be cleared or traffic redirected, before responders can reach those who need help.
Safety concerns also lead to closures. Damaged vehicles, debris, or possible hazards must be handled before traffic can resume. Once the scene is cleared and the roadway is safe, the bridge can reopen, and traffic flow can gradually return.
