Pleasant Hill, IA (August 8, 2026) – Emergency crews responded on Friday morning to a collision involving a semi-truck and a passenger vehicle that blocked the westbound lanes of Highway 163 in east Polk County.

The crash happened around 9:45 a.m. near the intersection of NE University Avenue, also known as Highway 163, and NE 88th Street, approximately one mile east of the Southeast Polk campus.

According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, occupants of the passenger vehicle were taken to a local hospital for treatment. Their conditions were not immediately known. The semi-truck driver was not injured.

The westbound lanes were blocked while emergency responders worked at the scene. Additional details about the collision, including the cause and the number of people injured, have not been released. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to determine the circumstances surrounding the crash.

We are thinking of those affected and wishing the injured a smooth recovery.

Why Crashes Involving Semi-Trucks Can Cause Major Traffic Disruptions

Collisions involving semi-trucks can require significant emergency and recovery efforts because of the size and weight of commercial vehicles. When a crash blocks travel lanes, responders may need to treat injured occupants, secure the scene, document evidence, and arrange for damaged vehicles to be removed.

Investigators may examine vehicle damage, roadway conditions, traffic patterns, and witness accounts to determine how the collision occurred. Lane closures may remain in place until emergency personnel have completed their work and the roadway is considered safe for motorists.
