Why Pedestrian Crashes on Interstates Are Often Fatal
Pedestrian crashes on interstates are especially dangerous because vehicles usually travel at higher speeds. A person on foot has no protection from the force of impact. Even a brief collision can lead to fatal injuries.
Interstate lanes also leave little room for drivers to react when a person is in the roadway. Low light, traffic volume, road curves, and vehicle speed can all affect visibility. Drivers may not have enough time to stop or move over safely.
After a fatal interstate crash, lanes may remain closed while crews assist at the scene and remove hazards. Traffic diversion helps keep other drivers away from the area. These closures also give emergency workers more space to complete their work safely.
