How Hit-and-Run Crashes on Freeways Are Investigated
Hit-and-run crashes on major highways can be difficult to investigate because vehicles often leave the scene quickly, and traffic conditions may change within minutes. Investigators usually begin by reviewing damage patterns and roadway evidence to determine how the collision occurred.
Physical evidence such as broken glass, paint transfer, or vehicle debris can help identify the type of vehicle involved. Statements from drivers and witnesses may also provide details about the direction of travel or possible contributing factors.
When incidents happen near freeway connectors or merging areas, investigators often examine lane changes, traffic flow, and visibility conditions. Surveillance cameras and dash camera footage can also help identify vehicles that left the scene.
