Why Fatal Highway Crashes Often Lead to Extended Lane Closures
Fatal crashes on major highways usually require long roadway closures so investigators can carefully document the scene and collect evidence. Measurements, vehicle positions, and roadway markings are often reviewed before damaged vehicles are removed.
High-speed roadways, such as urban expressways, can also pose safety concerns for emergency crews working near active traffic. Closing lanes allows responders to safely assist victims, redirect vehicles, and clear debris from the roadway.
Traffic congestion may spread well beyond the immediate crash site, especially during peak travel hours. Delays on opposite sides of the highway can also occur as drivers slow down near emergency activity or lane restrictions.
