Why Rollover Crashes Often Lead to Severe Injuries
Rollover crashes are among the most dangerous types of roadway collisions because they can expose vehicle occupants to multiple points of force in a short period of time. These crashes may happen after a vehicle strikes another car, leaves the pavement, or loses balance during sudden movement at higher speeds. Occupants who are not properly restrained face a greater risk of being thrown from the vehicle during a rollover.
Road design, traffic speed, and vehicle type can also affect the severity of a rollover. Larger vehicles with higher centers of gravity, such as SUVs and pickup trucks, are generally more likely to overturn during sharp maneuvers. After a major rollover, investigators often review vehicle positions, roadway markings, and debris patterns to understand better how the sequence unfolded.
