DALLAS, Dallas County, Texas, Sept. 15, 2026 — Two people were injured late Saturday night, September 12, when authorities say a suspected drunk driver struck another vehicle on Dallas Drive in Denton, causing it to roll over into a nearby parking lot.

Authorities said officers were sent to the 1400 block of Dallas Drive around 11:12 p.m. after reports of a major crash. Arriving officers reportedly found one vehicle flipped onto its hood in a motel parking lot, about 100 feet from the road. A second vehicle, described by authorities as the suspect vehicle, was found with front-end damage on the center median of Dallas Drive.

According to authorities, the suspect vehicle was headed southbound on Dallas Drive when it struck the other car, sending it into the parking lot. Medics took two occupants from the overturned vehicle to a Denton-area hospital with injuries described as not life-threatening.

Officers said the driver of the suspect vehicle, a 24-year-old man, told them he had just dropped off a friend after a concert. Authorities said he gave conflicting accounts about where the crash happened before officers determined his vehicle was the one involved on Dallas Drive.

Police reported signs of impairment, including bloodshot eyes and the smell of alcohol, and said he acknowledged drinking earlier in the evening. He was taken into custody after field sobriety testing, and officers said they found a nearly empty liquor bottle inside the vehicle during a search. He did not consent to a blood draw at the jail, according to the report.

The case remains under investigation.

We hope those who were hurt recover fully and quickly.

What the Numbers Show About Drunk-Driving Crashes

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, one alcohol-impaired-driving fatality occurred every 42 minutes on average in 2023. That rate reflects thousands of crashes each year in which a driver's blood alcohol level was over the legal limit, often on ordinary roads at night.

Many of these crashes happen late at night or in the early morning hours, when traffic is lighter but impaired driving rates climb. A driver who has been drinking may misjudge distance, react slowly, or drift out of a lane, turning a routine drive into a crash within seconds.

The consequences fall unevenly. Passengers and occupants of the vehicle that gets struck often bear the physical injuries, even though they were not the ones drinking. That imbalance is part of why these cases draw both criminal charges and public attention once the details come out.
