Derry, NH (February 21, 2026) – A Massachusetts man suffered serious injuries in a hit-and-run crash on I-93 in Derry Thursday night, according to New Hampshire State Police.
The incident occurred just before 10:30 p.m. near mile marker 9.6 on the northbound side of the interstate. Troopers said 38-year-old Tyler Stafford was driving a 2025 Mazda CX-9 when he struck the rear of another vehicle.
That vehicle did not stop and fled the scene, leaving Stafford’s SUV disabled on the roadway. Emergency units responded and transported Stafford to a regional hospital with serious injuries.
Officials believe a tow truck may have been involved, based on information received during the investigation. Two lanes of I-93 North were closed for approximately two hours as crews worked the scene.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available.
Our thoughts are with the injured driver as they continue to recover.
How Hit-and-Run Crashes Are Handled on Highways
Hit-and-run accidents are particularly dangerous when they happen at high speeds on interstates. These incidents can leave injured drivers without immediate help and create secondary risks for other motorists.
Investigators typically begin by reviewing witness reports, debris, and nearby traffic cameras to identify the fleeing vehicle. If the impact happens at the rear of a vehicle, it may suggest either distracted driving or an unexpected lane change.
Authorities also look at whether commercial or marked vehicles were in the area. In this case, reports suggest a tow truck may have been involved, which could help narrow the search. Highway crashes like this often prompt renewed calls for driver accountability and traffic camera use in rural or low-visibility areas.
