Grand Island, NE (February 21, 2026) – Two people were taken to the hospital early Friday after a crash involving a semi and an SUV on Highway 30 in Grand Island.
The collision occurred just before 6 a.m. at the intersection of Highway 30 and Shady Bend Road. Police said the semi was heading west when it attempted to make a left turn and collided with an eastbound SUV.
Both people inside the SUV were injured and transported to a nearby hospital. Their injuries were reported as non-life-threatening. Authorities cited the semi driver for failure to yield during the turn.
Traffic in the area was affected as emergency crews cleared the scene and assessed the vehicles. Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available.
We are thinking of those injured as they receive medical care.
Why Left-Turn Crashes Are Common at Busy Intersections
Crashes that occur during left turns are among the most frequent types of intersection collisions. These incidents often happen when a driver misjudges the speed of oncoming traffic or fails to yield properly.
In areas like Hwy 30, where vehicles may be traveling at higher speeds, even a small timing error can lead to serious consequences. Larger vehicles like semis need more time and space to complete a turn, increasing the risk of impact if the driver doesn’t wait for a clear gap.
Law enforcement often reviews these crashes to determine whether signs, signals, or road design contributed. Yielding properly and checking for traffic from both directions remains one of the most effective ways to prevent left-turn accidents.
