Why Pedestrian Crashes Often Occur During Overnight Hours
Pedestrian crashes frequently occur during late-night and early-morning hours when visibility is lower. Darkness can make it harder for drivers to see people walking near intersections, especially if street lighting is limited or weather conditions reduce sight distance.
Traffic patterns may also change overnight. Vehicles often move faster when roads are less crowded, leaving drivers with less time to react if a pedestrian enters the roadway.
Intersections can be particularly risky because vehicles may be turning, accelerating, or approaching from several directions. Pedestrians crossing the street may also be harder to detect when drivers focus on traffic signals or other vehicles.
Clothing color and visibility can also affect safety. Reflective materials and well-lit crossings can help improve how quickly drivers notice pedestrians at night.
