What Challenges Arise in Hit-and-Run Investigations?
Hit-and-run crashes can be difficult to solve when the vehicle leaves before officers arrive. Investigators often rely on debris left behind, nearby surveillance cameras, and witness statements to identify the driver.
Highways such as U.S. 19 typically carry steady traffic, even during overnight hours. Pedestrians in travel lanes face a serious risk because drivers may not expect to encounter pedestrians on a major roadway.
Early morning darkness can further limit visibility. Headlight range, roadway lighting, and clothing color can all affect how quickly a driver notices a person ahead.
