Altamonte Springs, FL (February 25, 2026) – A major crash caused injuries and shut down part of Interstate 4 westbound Tuesday morning, February 24, in Altamonte Springs. The collision occurred just before 8 a.m., according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The crash led to the closure of westbound lanes between SR-434 and SR-436. Drivers in the area experienced significant delays as traffic backed up during the morning commute.
Officials confirmed that people were injured in the crash, but the number of those hurt has not been released. Emergency units responded to the scene and worked to clear the roadway. Westbound express lanes remained open for drivers seeking an alternate route.
The crash remains under investigation. Our thoughts are with those injured as they recover.
How Do Interstate Closures Affect Morning Traffic?
When a major interstate like I-4 shuts down during peak hours, congestion can build quickly. Many drivers rely on highways for daily commutes, so even a short closure can cause delays that last for hours.
Injury crashes often require a larger response area. Lanes may close to allow medical crews to treat the injured and to remove damaged vehicles safely. Debris and disabled cars can also block multiple lanes.
Express lanes or alternate routes sometimes help reduce backups. However, traffic flow may take time to return to normal even after the scene is cleared.
