Douglas, WY (March 5, 2026) – One person was killed and another hospitalized after a two-vehicle crash on Sunday evening on WY 59 near milepost 35, about 35 miles north of Douglas in Converse County.
The collision occurred around 8:42 p.m. on March 1. Reports indicate a northbound Volkswagen Tiguan went off the road to the right before overcorrecting into the southbound lane and striking a Toyota Tundra traveling southbound.
The driver of the Tiguan, 36-year-old Andrew Winter of Torrington, died at the scene. Investigators found that Winter had not been wearing a seat belt and was partially ejected during the crash.
The driver of the Tundra, 39-year-old Christopher Thomas of Buffalo, was airlifted to Banner Medical Center in Casper and remains hospitalized.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more information may be released as it becomes available. We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased.
How Overcorrection and Lane Departures Can Lead to Severe Crashes
When a vehicle leaves its lane, drivers sometimes overcorrect their steering to return to the roadway. This sudden maneuver can push the vehicle into oncoming traffic, increasing the risk of a head-on collision.
Not wearing a seat belt can significantly increase the risk of being ejected during a crash, which often leads to fatal injuries. Roadway conditions, vehicle speed, and driver reaction all play a role in how such incidents unfold.
Investigators typically examine vehicle positions, skid marks, and impact points to reconstruct the sequence of events. Medical reports and witness statements can also provide insight into how the crash occurred.
