What Can Contribute to Head-On Crashes on Two-Lane Roads?
Head-on crashes may happen when a vehicle crosses the center line of a roadway and enters opposing traffic. On two-lane roads, this can occur for several reasons, including driver distraction, fatigue, speeding, or limited visibility around curves and hills. Even a brief lapse in attention can place vehicles directly in the path of oncoming traffic.
These types of crashes frequently lead to serious harm because both vehicles may be traveling at full speed when they meet. Investigators commonly review roadway markings, witness statements, vehicle positions, and traffic patterns to better understand how the vehicles came together. In some situations, weather, road surface conditions, or driver actions before the collision may also help explain what happened.
