Beaufort, SC (August 24, 2026) – A driver was killed, and another was injured in a head-on crash on Saturday night, August 22, on Laurel Bay Road near Shanklin Road. The collision happened around 9:30 p.m.

According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, a 2015 Nissan sedan was traveling east on Laurel Bay Road while a 2018 Ford sedan was heading west. The vehicles collided head-on near the intersection with Shanklin Road. The Nissan driver was the only person inside the vehicle and died at the scene from injuries.

The Ford driver was also alone and was taken by EMS for treatment. No further details about the driver’s condition were available. We extend our sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased driver.

Why Can Head-on Crashes Cause Severe Injuries?

Head-on crashes can be particularly dangerous because the vehicles travel toward one another before impact. The combined forces can cause significant damage and serious injuries to people inside the vehicles.

Lane position, vehicle speed, road conditions, and visibility can all affect the risk of a head-on collision. A vehicle crossing the center line can leave an approaching driver little time to avoid a collision.

Seatbelts and airbags can protect during a crash by helping secure occupants and reducing some forces on the body. Staying focused and maintaining proper lane position can also help prevent collisions with oncoming traffic.
