Karnes County, TX (June 17, 2026) – One person was killed, and two others were injured in a two-vehicle crash on State Highway 123 in Karnes County on Tuesday afternoon, June 16, around 3:16 p.m.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, a gray 2021 Ram 1500 was traveling northbound on SH 123 when it began to hydroplane. Investigators said the pickup crossed into the southbound lane and collided with a black 2011 Chevrolet Tahoe traveling in the opposite direction.

Due to the severity of the crash, traffic on SH 123 was closed in both directions for several hours. The roadway remained shut down until approximately 9:33 p.m. while crews worked at the scene and investigators gathered evidence. The crash remains under investigation by the Texas Department of Public Safety. We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased.
Why Hydroplaning Can Lead to Serious Collisions
Hydroplaning occurs when a vehicle’s tires lose contact with the road surface because of standing water. When this happens, drivers can temporarily lose steering and braking control, making it difficult to maintain their lane or avoid hazards.
After crashes involving possible hydroplaning, investigators often review weather conditions, roadway conditions, vehicle movements, and physical evidence from the scene. Tire condition and speed may also be examined to better understand how the vehicle reacted before the collision. These factors can help establish the sequence of events and determine what contributed to the crash.
