What Happens During a Hit-and-Run Pedestrian Investigation?
Hit-and-run pedestrian crashes are treated as serious incidents because the driver leaves the scene before emergency responders arrive. Investigators typically focus on gathering witness statements, reviewing nearby surveillance footage, and documenting vehicle debris or paint transfers left at the scene.
Road closures are often necessary to allow crash teams to carefully map evidence and reconstruct the event. Vehicle direction, impact location, and pedestrian position are key factors used to understand how the collision occurred. Law enforcement also works to identify suspect vehicles based on descriptions and traffic camera footage when available. These investigations can continue for days or longer as additional evidence is collected and analyzed.
