Why Interstate Crashes Can Lead to Extended Lane Closures
Crashes on major highways often require temporary lane closures to protect emergency crews, assist injured people, and remove damaged vehicles. Even incidents involving a small number of vehicles can create significant traffic disruptions when they occur on heavily traveled routes.
During the response, crews may assess roadway conditions, document evidence, and ensure that debris is removed before traffic resumes. Detours are sometimes used to redirect drivers away from the affected area and reduce congestion near the crash scene. Once emergency operations are complete and the roadway is considered safe, transportation officials can reopen the affected lanes. The length of a closure often depends on factors such as vehicle damage, traffic volume, and the amount of cleanup required.
