How Passenger Seatbelt Use Can Impact Crash Outcomes
Seatbelt use significantly reduces the risk of serious injury or death in vehicle crashes. Unrestrained passengers are more likely to be thrown from the vehicle during a collision, which can lead to severe or fatal injuries.
Crashes involving large vehicles, such as tractor-trailers, can be particularly dangerous because the size and weight of the truck increase the force experienced by smaller vehicles. Even a moderate-speed collision can result in critical injuries when one vehicle leaves the road and strikes fixed objects like trees.
Emergency responders often face complex scenes in these accidents, needing to quickly provide medical care and safely manage traffic while assessing multiple injuries. Awareness of seatbelt use and proper vehicle safety measures remains a key factor in preventing fatalities.
