The driver of the pickup, a 26-year-old man from Franklin, was not injured in the crash. Mercer East End Volunteer Fire Department and PennDOT assisted at the scene.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available. Our condolences go out to the family and friends of Gregory Booty.
Why Disabled Vehicle Crashes Like This on I-80 Are So Deadly
High-speed highways like I-80 present extreme risks for pedestrians, even those responding to emergencies like a disabled vehicle. When drivers exit their vehicles and move toward active lanes, even brief exposure to traffic can lead to fatal consequences.
In this incident, poor visibility during the evening and fast-moving traffic likely contributed to the tragic outcome. Pedestrians walking near or on interstates are rarely expected by drivers, and split-second reactions are often not enough to prevent impact.
Safety officials urge drivers whose vehicles become disabled to remain inside when possible and call for assistance. If exiting the vehicle is necessary, staying well clear of travel lanes and using hazard lights or flares may help reduce risk. Crashes like this highlight the need for increased awareness and caution on Pennsylvania’s major roadways.
