Frequently Asked Questions
What can drivers do to avoid multi-vehicle crashes like this one?
Keeping a safe following distance, staying alert for sudden braking ahead, and avoiding distractions are some of the most effective ways motorists can prevent chain-reaction collisions, especially on multi-lane highways where traffic can slow unexpectedly.
What injuries are most common in car accidents involving multiple vehicles?
Whiplash, broken bones, and head or chest injuries from impact with the steering wheel, dashboard, or airbags are common. Injury severity often depends on speed and the angle of impact.
What typically causes crashes like this one?
Common factors include following too closely, making sudden lane changes, driving while distracted, and misjudging the speed of surrounding traffic. Investigators often look at all of these when reconstructing how a multi-vehicle crash unfolded.
Does speed make a difference in how severe a crash is?
Yes. Higher speeds give drivers less time to react and increase the force of impact, which raises both the likelihood of serious injury and the amount of vehicle damage.
What to Do After a Car Accident in El Cajon, CA
If you're involved in a multi-vehicle crash, move to a safe spot if your vehicle is drivable and turn on hazard lights to warn oncoming traffic. Check on everyone involved and call 911 right away, even if injuries aren't immediately obvious. Some injuries, like whiplash or internal bruising, can take hours to show symptoms, so it's wise to get checked by a medical professional the same day. Exchange contact and insurance information with other drivers, and if CHP responds, ask how to obtain a copy of the official report once it's filed. If it's safe to do so, taking photos of the scene and vehicle positions can help clarify what happened later. Give yourself time to recover, both physically and otherwise, before making any major decisions about repairs or claims.
