SACRAMENTO, Sacramento County, Calif., Oct. 20, 2026 — A hit-and-run crash involving three vehicles left at least one injured on Monday evening, October 19, on southbound State Route 99 near 12th Avenue in Sacramento. One vehicle rolled over during the collision, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The crash was reported shortly before 6:45 p.m. near the Route 99 south connector at the Route 50 interchange. A sedan reportedly failed to yield to another vehicle attempting to merge, and that vehicle struck the rear of a second car, causing it to roll multiple times before coming to rest on its side. A third vehicle was also reportedly involved in the collision.
CHP upgraded the incident from a hit-and-run with no injuries to a hit-and-run with injuries, though the extent of any injuries has not been released. A witness told responders a driver believed to be in a red sedan tried to force another vehicle into the center divider before fleeing the scene. The exact point of impact remained unclear to that witness, who indicated it may have occurred near the Route 50-Route 99 transition.
Fire crews and a tow service responded to clear the scene, and at least one vehicle was towed from the roadway. The investigation into the hit-and-run driver remains active, and no arrests have been announced as of this report.
Our thoughts are with those who were injured, and we wish them a full recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions
What typically causes a vehicle to roll over in a crash like this?
Rollovers often happen when a vehicle is struck from behind or the side while changing lanes or merging, especially at highway speed, causing it to trip over a curb, median, or its own tires and tip onto its side or roof.
Are some roads more prone to rollover crashes than others?
Yes. Interchanges, highway transitions, and curved ramps see more rollovers due to merging traffic, speed changes, and tighter turns than straight freeway stretches.
What injuries are common in rollover crashes?
Occupants can suffer head and neck injuries, broken bones, and injuries from being thrown against the roof or window, particularly if they are not wearing a seatbelt.
What to Do After a Rollover Crash in Sacramento, CA
If you're involved in a rollover crash, stay as still as possible until you can assess whether you're able to move safely, since adrenaline can mask injuries. Call 911 even if injuries seem minor, and let paramedics check you over at the scene. Get the names and contact information of any witnesses, since in hit-and-run cases their accounts can be critical to identifying the fleeing driver. Request a copy of the CHP incident report once it's available, and follow up with a doctor in the days after the crash, as some injuries from a rollover don't show symptoms right away.
