Why Pedestrian Crashes on Interstates Are Especially Dangerous
Pedestrian collisions on interstate highways are often fatal because vehicles travel at high speeds, and drivers may have limited time to react. Construction zones can create additional hazards by narrowing lanes, shifting traffic patterns, or reducing visibility for both drivers and pedestrians.
Investigators typically review why a person exited their vehicle, where traffic lanes were positioned, and whether warning signs or barriers were present nearby. Vehicle speed, driver reaction time, and roadway conditions are also commonly examined after these types of crashes.
Road closures following interstate pedestrian collisions often last for hours while crews document evidence and safely manage traffic flow. Even after lanes reopen, investigators may continue gathering information to better understand the sequence of events.
