Why Driveway Entry Crashes Can Be Dangerous on Highways
Crashes involving vehicles entering highways from private driveways can become serious because of the speed difference between moving traffic and vehicles attempting to merge. Drivers pulling onto major roads must judge both distance and timing carefully before crossing lanes or entering traffic flow.
Highways such as US-63 often carry fast-moving vehicles with limited time to react when another car enters unexpectedly. Side-impact collisions are especially dangerous because the sides of passenger vehicles provide less protection than the front or rear sections.
Following these types of crashes, investigators commonly review sight distance, vehicle positioning, and roadway conditions. They may also examine whether drivers had a clear view of approaching traffic and enough time to avoid contact before the collision occurred.
