Opelousas, LA (July 30, 2026) – A 57-year-old electric bicycle rider lost his life after a wreck on I-49 Service Rd near LA 3721 in Opelousas early on Tuesday, July 28.

Investigators said Jamie Doucet was riding an electric bicycle south on I-49 Service Rd at about 6 a.m. At the same time, a 2012 Nissan Rogue was also traveling south when it struck the bicycle from behind.

Doucet was pronounced dead at the scene. The Nissan driver was not hurt. Investigators said the driver was not suspected of impairment and voluntarily provided a breath sample that detected no alcohol. A routine toxicology sample was collected from Doucet for further analysis. The cause of the accident continues to be examined as investigators work to determine what led to the fatal collision.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to Jamie Doucet’s family and loved ones during this difficult time.

Why Rear-End Crashes Involving Bicycles Can Be Especially Dangerous

Collisions involving bicycles and motor vehicles frequently result in severe outcomes because cyclists have little physical protection. Even at moderate speeds, a rear-end strike can cause life-threatening trauma due to the direct force placed on the rider.

Several factors may be reviewed after this type of roadway tragedy, including visibility, lighting conditions, vehicle speed, roadway design, and the movements of both the bicycle and the motor vehicle. Investigators may also examine physical evidence, witness statements, and available video footage to help establish a timeline. Toxicology testing is commonly performed in fatal cases as part of the standard review process. These findings help provide a clearer picture of how the roadway encounter unfolded and may contribute to future safety improvements.
