Ellsworth County, KS (April 15, 2026) – Two truck drivers were injured in a crash involving two semi-trucks on Tuesday afternoon, April 15, on Interstate 70 in Ellsworth County. The collision occurred around 1:45 p.m. near mile marker 219.3 on Kansas Highway 14.
According to reports, both trucks were traveling westbound when one semi slowed in the left lane due to a vehicle fire on the right shoulder. A second semi traveling behind failed to stop in time and struck the first truck from the rear.
The impact caused the lead truck to overturn, and both vehicles came to rest in the median. Emergency units responded and transported both drivers to hospitals for treatment.
The driver of the overturned truck, a 32-year-old man from Orlando, Florida, suffered minor injuries. The other driver, a 56-year-old man from Excelsior Springs, Missouri, was reported to have more serious injuries.
The crash remains under investigation. We extend our thoughts to those injured and wish them a full recovery.
Why Do Rear-End Crashes Involving Semi-Trucks Occur?
Rear-end crashes involving large trucks often happen when traffic slows unexpectedly. Due to their size and weight, semi-trucks require more distance to come to a complete stop.
Situations such as roadside incidents or hazards can prompt sudden braking. If the following driver does not adjust speed in time, a collision may occur.
When a semi-truck is struck or loses control, it can overturn or leave the roadway. These crashes can block lanes and pose additional risks to nearby drivers.
