Fairfield, CA (January 19, 2026) – A devastating wrong-way collision on Interstate 80 near the Cordelia Weigh Station claimed the lives of three people early Sunday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The crash occurred shortly before 2:30 a.m. on the eastbound side of I-80. Authorities say the deadly collision involved a white Dodge Charger occupied by two men and a black Land Rover driven by a woman. It remains unclear which of the two vehicles was traveling in the wrong direction at the time of the crash.
Emergency personnel responded to the scene and confirmed that all three individuals—both occupants of the Dodge and the lone driver of the Land Rover—were pronounced dead at the site of the collision. Due to the severity of the wreckage, the freeway was temporarily closed in the area as investigators worked through the early morning hours.
Officials have not yet released the identities of the deceased, pending notification of next of kin.
The California Highway Patrol is continuing its investigation to determine the circumstances that led to this tragic wrong-way crash, including whether impairment, excessive speed, or poor visibility may have contributed to the incident.
We extend our deepest sympathies to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives in this heartbreaking accident.
