Why Intersections on Rural Highways Can Be Dangerous for Drivers
Rural highway intersections often present unique driving risks, especially when traffic from smaller roads must cross or merge onto higher-speed highways. Drivers may have limited time to judge the speed and distance of approaching vehicles, particularly large commercial trucks that require longer stopping distances.
Stop-sign intersections on highways can become more hazardous during busy morning hours when visibility, timing, and traffic flow all affect driver decisions. Older drivers may also face added challenges with reaction time or visibility while approaching intersections.
Large trucks pulling trailers can add another layer of risk because of their size and weight. Even when trailers are empty, these vehicles need more roadway space to slow down or avoid sudden hazards. Safety experts often encourage drivers to come to a complete stop at intersections and carefully check for oncoming traffic before proceeding.
