Lexington, KY (May 7, 2026) – Two separate injury crashes tied up traffic on Interstate 64 and Interstate 75 in Lexington on Wednesday, May 6, blocking multiple lanes and causing significant backups.
On I-64 westbound, the middle and left lanes were blocked past the Haley exit. Traffic backed up past the southern split as a result. The backup was worsened by a separate crash that had already occurred on I-75 nearby.
The crash on I-75 involved two vehicles. One driver was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening. No further details about the second crash on I-64 had been released at the time of this writing.
The incidents remain under review by authorities. Our thoughts are with those affected as they continue to recover.
How Do Back-to-Back Crashes Affect Traffic Flow on Kentucky Interstates?
When two crashes occur close together on a busy interstate corridor, the traffic impact can be much greater than either crash would cause on its own. Drivers slowing to pass one incident often create conditions that lead to a second crash nearby. In a city like Lexington, where I-64 and I-75 intersect, congestion from a single blocked area can quickly ripple across both highways.
Kentucky’s interstate system around Lexington handles a high volume of both commuter and commercial traffic, making lane blockages during peak hours especially disruptive. Even a partial lane closure can cause backups stretching several miles within minutes. Emergency crews working multiple scenes at once must also divide their resources across a wider area.
Drivers in Kentucky are encouraged to move over and slow down when passing any crash scene, both as a legal requirement and as a way to keep secondary crashes from occurring
