Why Median-Crossing Crashes Have Severe Outcomes?
Crashes involving vehicles that cross medians and enter opposing lanes of traffic frequently result in serious or fatal injuries due to the high combined speeds at the moment of impact. Head-on and near head-on collisions generate significant forces that can cause catastrophic vehicle damage.
Investigators reviewing median-crossing crashes commonly examine roadway evidence, vehicle conditions, witness statements, and any available electronic data. Authorities also evaluate whether medical issues, impairment, distraction, fatigue, or roadway conditions may have contributed to the vehicle leaving its lane.
Understanding why a vehicle crossed into oncoming traffic is critical to determining the cause of the collision and identifying any contributing factors.
