Benson, NC (June 28, 2026) – A morning head-on collision involving a cement truck killed a 49-year-old driver, and another person was critically injured on US 301 near the Interstate 40 overpass north of Benson.
Officials received reports of the crash around 7:10 a.m. on June 26, when a northbound 2017 GMC Terrain crossed the center line into the southbound lanes and struck a 2022 Western Star cement truck head-on. After the impact, the cement truck left the roadway, entered a ditch, and caught fire. The GMC Terrain traveled off the opposite side of the highway and stopped on the northbound shoulder.
Draper Leroy Scott, 49, of Lumberton, was taken to WakeMed in Raleigh with critical injuries and later died. The cement truck driver, Raymond Miles, 43, of Leland, was also taken to WakeMed with life-threatening injuries.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash.
