Why Are Motorcycle Crashes More Likely to Cause Serious Injuries?
Motorcycle riders have less physical protection than people inside passenger vehicles. A collision can expose a rider to direct impact with another vehicle or the roadway. Helmet use, protective gear, visibility, traffic conditions, and vehicle speed can affect the severity of injuries.
Intersections can create additional hazards when vehicles turn across opposing traffic or enter a rider’s path. Drivers should check carefully for motorcycles before making turns and allow enough space for them to pass safely. Motorcyclists can also improve visibility by using headlights, maintaining safe distances, and staying alert to surrounding traffic.
