DeLand, FL (September 8, 2026) – A 22-year-old motorcyclist from Ormond Beach died after striking the rear of a semi-truck on Interstate 4 in Volusia County near mile marker 122, east of SR 44, before 4 a.m. on Sunday, September 6.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the motorcyclist was riding a 2024 Honda CBR500R eastbound in the inside lane. A 2025 semi-truck ahead had stopped because of a roadblock created by a separate crash. The motorcyclist did not stop in time and struck the rear trailer of the semi-truck. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The 61-year-old semi-truck driver, who is from Miami, was not injured. He remained at the scene following the crash. The incident remains under investigation as officials continue reviewing the circumstances surrounding the collision.
We offer our heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones.
How Can Roadblocks Affect Highway Safety?
Roadblocks caused by earlier crashes can create sudden changes in traffic flow. Drivers approaching stopped traffic may have limited time to slow down, especially when traveling at highway speeds or during overnight hours.
Motorcyclists can face additional risks because motorcycles are smaller and may be less visible to other road users. Maintaining a safe following distance gives drivers and riders more time to react when traffic suddenly stops. Staying alert to brake lights, lane changes, and traffic backups can also help reduce the risk of secondary crashes.
