What Makes Pedestrian Crashes Involving Semi-Trucks Serious?
Pedestrians face a greater risk of severe injury when struck by a large commercial truck because of the vehicle’s size and weight. The height of a truck can also create areas around the vehicle that are difficult for a driver to see.
Turning movements can create additional hazards for pedestrians near intersections. A truck may need more space to complete a turn, while pedestrians may be crossing at the same time. Drivers should check carefully for people in crosswalks and along the sides of the roadway before turning.
Visibility is another factor in pedestrian safety. Blind spots around large trucks can limit a driver’s view of nearby people, particularly during turns. Pedestrians should remain alert around large vehicles and avoid entering areas where the driver may have limited visibility.
