What Happens When a Driver Fails to Yield?

A failure to yield can cause a serious collision when one vehicle enters the path of another vehicle that has the right of way. The resulting impact can cause injuries to drivers and passengers, particularly children and other vulnerable occupants.

Investigators may examine vehicle positions, roadway markings, traffic signs, and statements from those involved to determine how the collision occurred. Damage to the vehicles can also help establish the direction and point of impact.

Safety devices can provide important protection during a crash. Children should be properly restrained in accordance with applicable safety requirements, while adults should use seat belts whenever traveling in a vehicle.
