Flagler Beach, FL (January 9, 2026) – A fatal crash on State Road A1A Wednesday resulted in a shutdown of the highway and triggered a series of secondary accidents during the emergency response. While the exact circumstances surrounding the initial collision remain under investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol, officials confirmed that no injuries were reported among the occupants of a Chevy and a propane truck involved in the primary incident.
As authorities diverted traffic around the crash scene to South Central Avenue, complications quickly followed. According to Flagler Beach Fire Chief Bobby Cox, a semi-truck attempting to navigate the detour struck a fire hydrant, causing a significant water main break. Fire crews responded to contain the flooding, but as Engine 11 from Flagler Beach Fire Department arrived to assist, it was struck by a passing vehicle.
“The driver wasn’t paying attention and ended up striking the driver’s side running board,” Cox explained. “Luckily, it looks like it went underneath it, so we received very little damage. The truck is back in service today.”
Fortunately, no injuries occurred during these secondary events. However, officials used the incident as a reminder of the importance of Florida’s Move Over law, which requires drivers to change lanes when approaching emergency or service vehicles. In urban areas like Flagler Beach, where the speed limit is 25 mph, drivers must slow to 5 mph when unable to move over.
“This was a clear example of how quickly a situation can escalate when drivers aren’t paying attention,” Cox said. “I know drivers can be in a rush during these times, but it’s imperative to operate with caution around emergency units.”
The original crash marks the first roadway fatality of 2026 in Flagler County, and the first motorcycle-related fatality in the state this year. In 2025, Flagler County recorded 18 traffic deaths, seven of which involved motorcyclists, per the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles.
We extend our deepest condolences to those affected by this tragedy and urge all drivers to remain alert and cautious around emergency scenes.
