FONTANA, San Bernardino County, Calif., Oct. 20, 2026 — Multiple lanes of eastbound Interstate 10 near Citrus Avenue shut down early Tuesday morning, October 20, after a multi-vehicle crash left at least one person hurt, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The collision was first reported as a traffic hazard before it was updated to a crash with unknown injuries. A caller told dispatchers one vehicle had come to rest in the center divider, and radio traffic described a gray Toyota GR86 blocking the HOV lane with someone reportedly hurt inside. A black or gray Honda sedan was also involved, along with at least one other vehicle.
Additional radio traffic indicated a vehicle had spun out and ended up blacked out in the center divider while another car sat in the number three lane, raising concern among responding units. One report described a vehicle rear-ending another near the Toyota.
All lanes were reported stopped for a time as crews worked the scene, with traffic backed up from the Cherry Avenue area. Two tow companies were called to the scene to clear the vehicles. By just before 4 a.m., CHP units reported the lanes reopened and said they would make rounds through the area checking for drowsy drivers.
The incident remains under review. We wish the injured a complete recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions
What typically causes crashes like this one? Rear-end and multi-vehicle collisions on freeways are often linked to sudden slowdowns, following too closely, or a driver who is fatigued or distracted. Investigators look at all of these factors before determining a cause.
Why does speed make a difference in crash outcomes? Higher speeds reduce the time a driver has to react and increase the force involved in any impact, which tends to make injuries more severe and vehicles harder to control after a collision.
How dangerous is driving while distracted or drowsy? Even a few seconds of lost attention, whether from a phone, fatigue, or another distraction, can prevent a driver from braking or steering in time to avoid a crash, especially in heavy freeway traffic.
Do weather or road conditions play a role in freeway crashes? Wet pavement, poor lighting, and early-morning darkness can all make it harder for drivers to see hazards and stop safely, even on a route as heavily traveled as I-10.
What to Do After a Car Accident in Fontana, CA
If you're involved in a freeway crash, move to a safe area if possible and turn on hazard lights to warn other drivers. Call 911 and wait for CHP or emergency crews to arrive before attempting to move a damaged vehicle. Even if injuries seem minor, get checked by a medical provider, since some injuries from a collision don't show symptoms right away. Exchange information with other drivers if it's safe to do so, and take photos of the scene if you're able. Keep a copy of the CHP incident report once it's available, since it can be useful for insurance or medical follow-up in the days after the crash.
