FONTANA, San Bernardino County, Calif., Oct. 20, 2026 — At least one person reported wanting transport to a hospital after a three-vehicle crash Monday afternoon, October 19, on eastbound Interstate 10 near Sierra Avenue, the California Highway Patrol said.
The crash was reported shortly before 2 p.m. and involved a white Toyota Camry, a Toyota Tacoma, and a black Lexus RX350. A separate report described a green Tacoma, a white Honda Civic, and a blue SUV.
The California Highway Patrol initially logged the call as a collision with injuries of unknown severity before updating it to confirm an ambulance was en route. Units held the number one and two lanes, and a traffic hazard was also reported in the carpool lane nearby, slowing eastbound traffic near Sierra Avenue through the afternoon.
Fire personnel were asked to return to the scene after one party asked to be transported. A report of a disabled big rig in the area was also logged as a possibly separate incident, and officers worked to sort out whether it was connected to either crash.
The investigation remains active. We hope everyone who was hurt makes a swift and full recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are secondary crashes common after an initial wreck?
Yes. Stopped or slowed traffic from a first crash often causes additional collisions nearby, which is why responders frequently work to confirm whether reports in the same stretch of road are connected or separate incidents.
What makes multi-vehicle crashes hard to investigate?
Investigators have to establish the order vehicles struck each other, which lane each was traveling in, and whether conditions like traffic backups or a disabled vehicle played a role, which can take time to sort out from witness accounts and scene evidence.
What causes multi-vehicle pile-ups?
Common factors include sudden braking, lane changes in heavy traffic, reduced visibility, and existing hazards such as a stalled vehicle or earlier collision that other drivers don't see in time to stop.
What to Do After a Multi-Vehicle Crash in Fontana, CA
If you're involved in a crash on a freeway like I-10, try to move to the shoulder if your vehicle is drivable and it's safe to do so, and turn on hazard lights to warn oncoming traffic. Check yourself and passengers for injuries before stepping out, since fast-moving lanes nearby can be dangerous even after the initial impact. Call 911 so officers and medical crews can respond and document the scene. Even if you feel fine, a medical check is worth it, since some injuries from a crash don't show symptoms right away. Get a copy of the CHP incident report once it's available, and keep any photos or notes from the scene for your records.
