Why Vehicle Fires Can Increase the Danger After a Crash
Vehicle fires are relatively uncommon, but they can significantly increase the risks associated with a traffic collision. When a fire develops after a crash, occupants may have only a short amount of time to exit safely before flames and smoke spread.
The likelihood of injury can increase if vehicle doors are difficult to open or if occupants require assistance to leave the vehicle. Quick action by nearby witnesses can sometimes help people reach safety before emergency crews arrive.
Investigators reviewing crashes involving vehicle fires often examine the sequence of impacts, fuel system damage, electrical components, and other factors that may have contributed to the fire. They may also evaluate how quickly the fire developed and whether occupants were able to exit the vehicle promptly. These findings help clarify how the collision and resulting fire unfolded.
