Macon, GA (June 24, 2026) – A pedestrian lost his life after being struck by a vehicle early on Tuesday morning on Pio Nono Avenue in Macon.

According to the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office, the collision occurred shortly before 4 a.m. beneath the Interstate 75 overpass near the intersection of Pio Nono Avenue and Glendale Avenue. Investigators said a 40-year-old man driving a silver Kia Soul struck a pedestrian who was attempting to cross the roadway.

When emergency units arrived, they found the pedestrian unresponsive. Medical personnel attempted lifesaving measures, but the man died at the scene.

Officials later identified the deceased as 36-year-old Tremaine Devon Coats. Investigators reported that Coats was wearing dark clothing at the time he was crossing the roadway.

The driver remained at the site following the collision. No charges had been filed as of the latest update.

Investigators continue to review the circumstances surrounding the fatal wreck. Our deepest condolences go out to the family and loved ones of Tremaine Devon Coats.

Why Visibility Can Be a Factor in Overnight Pedestrian Collisions

Pedestrian collisions during overnight hours often pose visibility challenges. Reduced lighting can make it more difficult for drivers to see people crossing or walking near roadways, especially in areas with limited street lighting.

Several factors may affect how visible a pedestrian is to approaching drivers, including clothing color, weather conditions, roadway design, and surrounding light sources. Dark-colored clothing can blend into the nighttime environment, reducing the distance at which a driver may notice someone ahead.

When reviewing pedestrian collisions, investigators often examine lighting conditions, vehicle speed, traffic patterns, and the pedestrian’s path of travel. Physical evidence and witness accounts can help establish the sequence of events. These details provide a clearer picture of how the collision occurred and the factors that may have contributed to it.
