How Speed Can Increase the Severity of Freeway Crashes
Higher driving speeds can reduce the amount of time motorists have to react to changing traffic conditions on busy freeways. When vehicles suddenly stop or debris appears in travel lanes, drivers traveling quickly may struggle to avoid contact.
Multi-vehicle freeway collisions often become more severe because each additional vehicle creates new hazards for approaching traffic. Secondary crashes may happen when drivers swerve abruptly or brake hard to avoid disabled vehicles ahead.
Roadway debris can also increase danger after the initial collision. Broken parts, damaged tires, and scattered cargo may block lanes or force sudden lane changes. Investigators commonly review traffic flow, vehicle spacing, and witness statements to better understand how a chain-reaction crash developed.
