Fresno, CA (January 14, 2026) – Melissa Culver was among several people injured in a massive multi-vehicle crash that claimed one life on Sunday morning, January 11, on southbound Highway 99 in Fresno. The pileup occurred around 9:15 a.m. between Cedar and North Avenues, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Melissa and her husband were riding in a blue Hyundai when they became involved in the 17-vehicle chain-reaction crash. Investigators say dense fog contributed to reduced visibility, causing vehicles to suddenly slow down and be struck by others traveling at higher speeds.
Amid the wreckage, a passenger exited one of the vehicles after the initial impact and was tragically struck by oncoming traffic. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene and later identified by the Fresno County Coroner’s Office as 61-year-old Gustavo Villanueva Vargas of Fresno.
Melissa Culver sustained bruises to her chest and forearms, while her husband suffered multiple cuts and additional bruising. Several other individuals, including minors, were also transported to local hospitals with injuries ranging from minor to major.
A section of Highway 99 was closed temporarily as authorities worked to manage the chaotic scene and begin their investigation. CHP officials confirmed that low visibility from fog was a significant factor in the incident, which remains under review.
