Frequently Asked Questions
Does road surface condition matter for motorcyclists? Yes. Loose gravel, wet pavement, potholes and uneven lane markings affect a motorcycle's traction far more than a car's, since a bike has only two contact points with the road.
What gear helps reduce injury in a motorcycle crash? A DOT-approved helmet, abrasion-resistant jacket and pants, gloves and over-the-ankle boots are commonly cited by safety officials as reducing the severity of injuries in a crash.
What usually causes motorcycle crashes like this one? Common factors include a driver failing to see an oncoming or merging motorcycle, left-turn collisions at intersections, and speed. Investigators have not stated a cause in this case.
Why do motorcycle crashes tend to cause more serious injuries? Riders lack the structure of a vehicle cab, so impacts that a car occupant might walk away from can cause more serious injury to a motorcyclist.
