Frequently Asked Questions
How can drivers avoid getting caught in a highway pileup?
Keeping a safe following distance and slowing down early when traffic ahead is braking or merging gives drivers more time to react if a crash develops in front of them.
What should I do if I come up on a crash scene on the highway?
Slow down well before reaching the scene, turn on hazard lights to warn drivers behind, and move into a lane away from the wreck if it's safe to do so.
Why does following distance matter so much on connector ramps and highways?
A longer gap between vehicles gives a driver more time to stop or steer around a hazard, which matters especially on ramps where lanes narrow and traffic merges.
