Frequently Asked Questions
How does fog or low visibility contribute to pile-ups?
Reduced visibility cuts down the time drivers have to react to slowed or stopped traffic ahead, which can turn a single crash into a chain-reaction collision involving several vehicles.
Why is following distance so important?
Leaving enough space between vehicles gives drivers room to brake safely if traffic ahead slows suddenly, lowering the chance of rear-end and multi-vehicle crashes.
Are secondary crashes common after an initial wreck?
Yes. A first crash can block lanes or ramps and catch oncoming drivers off guard, leading to additional collisions before emergency crews can secure the scene.
What makes multi-vehicle crashes hard to investigate?
Investigators have to determine the sequence of impacts among several vehicles, which usually requires reviewing vehicle positions, damage patterns and any available video or witness accounts.
