Fresno County, CA (January 8, 2026) – A 58-year-old man was killed in a wrong-way crash on Highway 99 Sunday afternoon, according to the California Highway Patrol. The victim has been identified as Paul Nichelmann.
The fatal collision occurred around 2:00 p.m. on January 4, when Nichelmann was driving a Ford Ranger northbound in the southbound lanes of Hwy 99, beginning near Olive Ave. As he traveled in the wrong direction, two southbound vehicles, a Ford Bronco and a Chevrolet Equinox, were approaching the area.
CHP officials reported that the driver of the Ford Bronco attempted to avoid a collision but was unable to do so, resulting in a head-on impact with Nichelmann’s vehicle. The Chevrolet Equinox also crashed into the wreckage moments later. The force of the collisions left all three vehicles disabled, blocking both the No. 1 and No. 2 southbound lanes.
Emergency responders arrived and transported all involved parties to nearby hospitals. Nichelmann later succumbed to his injuries. The two women driving the Bronco and Equinox were hospitalized with injuries that have not yet been described.
The California Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the wrong-way driving incident.
