Phelan, CA (January 8, 2026) – Authorities have identified the man killed in a December 23 crash on southbound Interstate 15 near Highway 138 in San Bernardino County.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the victim was 73-year-old Daniel Edward Kelleher, a resident of Caldwell. The fatal crash occurred around 8:49 p.m. in the Phelan area, just north of the Highway 138 interchange, and drew a large response from emergency personnel.
Details from the scene remain limited, but Kelleher was involved in a deadly collision along I-15 southbound. While initial reports did not confirm how many vehicles were involved, earlier accounts stated that a smaller vehicle had become trapped beneath a semi-truck. It has not yet been confirmed whether that scenario is consistent with Kelleher’s vehicle.
Emergency responders attempted life-saving measures, but Kelleher was pronounced deceased at the scene. The cause of the crash has not been determined, and officials continue to investigate whether factors such as speed, mechanical failure, or road conditions played a role.
The California Highway Patrol is leading the investigation and is expected to release further details as more information becomes available.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Daniel Edward Kelleher during this time of loss.
