Why Interstate Crashes Often Lead to Major Traffic Disruptions
Highways such as Interstate 75 carry large volumes of vehicles traveling at higher speeds than city streets. When a crash occurs on these roadways, damaged vehicles and debris can quickly block multiple lanes of traffic.
Emergency crews often need space to assist injured people and assess the scene before vehicles can be removed. During this time, traffic may slow or stop while lanes remain closed.
Even after a crash scene is cleared, congestion can continue for some time. Traffic backups often take longer to fully ease as vehicles that were delayed begin moving through the area again.
